I am a closet Bollywood film lover. Not just because of the cheesy story lines or the epic 4 hour time slot you need to sacrifice to watch them. I am in love with the bracelets, the necklaces, the earrings. And truth be told if I'm not wearing vintage I'm channeling Bollywood hippie chick.

Why you ask? What other genre of fashion allows you to wear all of your accessories at once without it becoming a scary conglomeration of stating the obvious; namely, 'I'm wearing every single accessory I own'? This is all you need (and which I happen to possess)

♥ Maxi skirt any will do - it doesn't have to be coloured ♥ A plain top ♥ Chandelier earrings (vital and worth the lobe stretching properties in order to pull off this look effectively) ♥ Every dangly, spangly, gawdy, sparkly (preferably gold or silver) necklace you own ♥ Ditto for bracelets (your forearm can be up to 30cm long - use your maths to figure out how many will fit) ♥ Jeweled flats (essential - you will wear them 90% of the time - why the heels you ask? see below) ♥ Heels for formality - ditch them asap.

That is it. Anyone that know me knows that I employ this look often. If you balance it right, the amount of jewelery and accessories dazzle and distract your audience, thus averting their attention away from a bad hair/ feeling flabby/ bad skin/ puffy eyes/ general bad mood kind of day. It's a winner.

A little sneak peak at some of the decorations gracing Ahka Vintage HQ (aka my home) Here is an original 70's Starburst clock I picked up at a local garage sale - the date on the back says 1972 and it hangs grandly on my grape coloured kitchen wall. It has a few scrapes and bangs - but it all adds to the allure and history of the piece.

Do you like it? Too bad - it's mine - not for sale.

This is probably the only campaign all summer that I actually want every single piece out of the collection. Including the candy pink hair. My goodness this breathes everything summer, sea, mermaid, freedom and happiness. Part of the campaign: 'white sand that glitters in the sun and gets stuck like diamonds on your skin'. They read my mind. Now don't tell me that you wouldn't mind any of this either!

There are some really cool things that happen on my street. Like trees that burst into full bloom then leave all their pretty petals all over the road and sidewalk. This is actually what we really were photographing when we had the disastrous idea to do something with an empty frame from our last post. We should have just stuck with the plan.

Being 2012 and the beginning of fantastical new things - we are going to do some super things with the blog - so keep your eyes peeled for what's coming up. We're not yet one year old and feel pretty happy with how we've changed and grown over the past few months. Next month we go on a ridiculously huge shopping adventure - and have half a dozen ideas up our sleeve to be released later this year.

Remember I had a rant about people copying our vintage crochet dresses? Well I've come to terms with it and taken a new stance - I'm actually pretty flattered now - because one particular vintage seller has taken it on so much that it looks almost identical to the ones we've been doing for quite a while.

Why am I flattered now I hear you ask? Well for a change we feel like we are actually doing something right! So much so that others want to imitate our designs! Of course the way the universe works they will likely be more successful at it - but satisfaction comes in knowing the Lara's creativity is unique, she thought of the patterns, the designs, the methods - and sewed it herself. As one of you very thoughtful readers of ours put it - "someone copying you is the biggest form of flattery"

In light of that Lara has again done something gorgeous - put a little modern twist on something 'old'. What do you think? She's also outdone herself with the most perfect wedding dress. If she'd done that 8 years ago I so would have worn it for my wedding.

These little dresses that we had were just darling. They were floral and sweet and really girly.... except this one. Made from a soft satin - the print on this dress was everything out of a Jackson Pollock dream - crazy colours, lines, messiness, no rhyme or reason as to why the patterns did what they did. I LOVED it. Unfortunately once the fabric ran out... so did these dresses. And now we only have one solitary garment left.... and I'm seriously considering keeping it for myself.

So after the initial hype of launching www.ahkavintage.com we have actually had some time to chill and feel really good about ourselves. Of course I could brag about the billions of sales we had in the first few hours of opening the store (which didn't happen - so really we have nothing to brag about) but it really isn't about how much selling we've done - for us two techno-phobic, backyard vintage selling sisters this is a real milestone for us. For starters we've found we can actually work together without strangling each other, and have batted around ideas for months on how we want Ahka Vintage to grow. We're not in it for the fame, for the 'being seen' - hence why we use the beautiful Ashlei as our go to vintage girl. You can have a read of our rants about being just another vintage seller here. We are in it.... once again... for the reasons we started this in the first place - for the love of Vintage!

If you are a fan of our Facebook page then you would know that our goal is to be an 'eco friendly punch in the face to mass production'. By mass production we mean the poor quality, cheap, tacky, seasonal fashion that proudly graces ~~money making machines~~ chain stores.

Having said that we are all for trade shows and looking to expand, reinvent and stay fresh. So when a trade show rolled its way into town a couple of months back of course we checked it out. And we struck a little gold.

These exquisite lace and crochet dresses are new ('shock, horror...not vintage?!') and mass produced. (I heard you fall off your chair) We fell in love with them because of their femininity, grace, hippie, boho and whimsical delicateness. And the clincher? These unique dresses are made by, and help to support, training and work for women living in poverty in under privileged countries. Now this is the kind of mass production we don't mind getting in on. Something that is sustainable. Sorry though - it doesn't have a designer label attached to it. If it did it would be 3000 times the price.

The start of another year, where all the New Years Resolutions will be broken within the first 2 weeks (I'm a closet pessimist).

Who needs resolutions - my advice: live everyday as a fresh start and reassess what you do along the way. Set achievable goals, then you will succeed in attaining them. Your final goal is met by setting small ones that lead up to it. I thought this painting Lara and I saw in a chic little gallery was just right for this post. And this is really what Einstein meant when he penned this little ditty.

I'm a big fan of the Bandwagon. Big fan. Usually if one rolls into town I grapple on and take the ride; until I realise that I really couldn't be bothered keeping up appearances and subsequently fall off.

Hence this post is dedicated to the latest Bandwagon to roll into Blogtown. The yearly recap. I thought - "What a grand idea!" - that way I could show off all my best posts to you all, and fingers crossed you won't click on my crap ones. Pending the success of this post will be an indicator as to whether we will keep on riding this Bandwagon year after year.

As cynical as I may sound - We (now collectively talking as technically there are two of us running this blog) have actually had quite the riot starting this blog for the store (insert shameless plug here) and have grown quite the addiction of checking some of you out regularly. It's been a blast.

Oh and for the record - that special little announcement we hinted to in our last post is still rolling - no Bandwagon pun intended.

ANNOUNCING SOMETHING

Earthy wedges are fantastic. They can be worn all day, don't have the audacity or toffee-nosed-ness dress shoes have, and can be worn at the beach and no one blink an eyelid.

We've long blown our own trumpet as to the amazing-ness of our handmade vintage crochet dresses. Maybe blown it a little too loud as some very sneaky people have been copying our original designs. Watch your back, sneaky people, watch your back I say.

On a lighter and less threatening note, here is one that has been dyed a charcoal grey colour - I simply love it because it's a perfect throw over for the beach this summer, when it's cloudy, and the sun isn't shining. Like the day of this shoot.

Also some HUGE things are still coming for 2012 - as you know we have teamed up and with our powers combined we will be launching our webstore - just like the 3 million other vintage sellers out there - however we will be different - we'll tell you why shortly. Don't fall off the edge of your seats in excitement now.

CREATIVELY REDESIGNED MOVIE POSTERS

Movie posters. Always been a crowd favourite. I used to have my bathroom walls covered top to bottom in movie posters. One side was A Knights Tale with Heath Ledger's face staring down (literally all 32 of his faces - that was how many of the same poster I had) and the other side decked in similar fashion with Moulin Rouge posters. Visitors thought I was nuts. It also discouraged them from using the bathroom as they felt rather uncomfortable.

These days I would forgo the use of a handsome face and replace it with some re-interpretations of popular films. A movie poster needs to convey intrigue, a snippet of story line, or just plain artistic talent. I like how no two interpretations will ever be the same. This is fine art to me - being able to take something identifiable and putting your own mark on it.

P.S. The Jaws one is my favourite. You?

Pink. Blurrghhh. Not a nice colour. Suitable for the blonde, beach-babe variety of our species. It seems to suit them so much better. So with that attitude we reluctantly choose dresses of the candy-floss (cotton candy for you northern hemisphere-ers) variety, since we are both dark haired and olive complexion. Surprisingly it suited quite well.

Jazz it up with some vintage accessories like this totally rad cane hand bag, some ankle candy, a nice smile and voila. Vintage dessert.

Remember we promised to show you Lara's huge collection of statement jewelery? Well here is piece number two - and I must say this is one ring that I will try and sneak into my suitcase next time I visit her - isn't it gorgeous? I love the off center pearl and the detailing on the band. Just stunning. It has such a strong art deco feel to it - right up my Vintage alley! Only slightly jealous. Not much though.

Glomesh was never a big favorite. I always saw Glomesh clutches and handbags that an aunt or 'trendy' person had that was a little on the faded metallic side and let me tell you - with ill-fitting pedal pushers and a large cardigan with the face of an appliqued cute kitten on it - the sight ain't pretty people. Ain't pretty.

However on our vintage vagrant travels we picked up this perfect cream Glomesh clutch - and now I see what all the fuss was about. It feels like metallic silk and looks just divine. And this little Mexican inspired smock from the store is the perfect accessory to the statement piece, don't you think?

Lara has a ridiculous urge to collect the largest, most in your face unique rings out there. Not your plastic-y cheap costume variety either. Some say that her ring fetish caused her to go and find a full time job to pay for no less than 10 rings in one month. There is something about these silver crafted statement rings though. Wearing absolutely nothing vintage. This is actually my run around town in the heat outfit - black top to hide dirt/stains/anything unsavory and a little pop of candy pink - which is not normally my colour but I like to mix it up a bit.

Just thought this little quiet area of town was just perfect to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life - sit and absorb, be inspired and return to seeing things from a more artistic point of view. It's amazing what can be done with small spaces.

NAIL ART MAKES ME VOMIT

No - your nails don't look chic and classy - they look like something out of a sci-fi horror movie, the nails of the baddie who tries to look like a fashionista, but fails miserably because her dress sense is slightly on the off putting, tragic side of the line.

I know now I have made some enemies. But please ladies - don't do it. It's wrong. If you are going to do anything with those talons make it classy - do something like this:

There is something intrinsically beautiful about a vintage crochet dress. It doesn't have the entirely alternative feel that you might expect. It really is a work of art, a piece that stands out, that lets the light dance through each one of it's handmade stitches.

I've always been the crochet tablecloth-come-bedspread kind of girl, and not entirely convinced that a dress made out of the same stitches could look just stunning - until I saw the light play with the shapes and outline of the figure - this really is the perfect dress.

The deadliness of these handmade clocks tempted me to go and raid the storage area for all our vinyl, attack it with scissors and a large flame, and make something really really really cool. Or I could just spend the $80 or so and buy it instead. Not as much fun though.

Hope you have all been just smashing. I finally planted my organic vege patch in my yard last weekend and literally leaped with joy this afternoon when I saw the first sprouts appear after just a matter of days. It was my lettuce that sprouted first. Ahhh the little things.

WALKING THE DOG

Funny walking the dog used to be what we did with Yo-Yo's. Now it's literal. Absolutely loving this amazing azure gypsy dress we picked up for the store. Just right for a jaunt in the park with someone else's pet pooches, perfect lighting, and that oh-so-fabulous vintage handbag. I had one for real in the early 80's. Come on admit it - you think it's cool too.
